Times, Places and Dua’s For Hajj and Umrah

During Hajj and Umrah, there are no required duas that a pilgrim needs to make. For example, there are no specifics invocations for each round of tawaf. However, there are some duas reported in the Sunnah of the Prophet [SAWS] that should be made at their specified times to beautify the rituals of Hajj and Umrah.

Specific Times to Make Dua During Hajj and Umrah

• Before drinking the Zam Zam water

The Prophet [saws] said “The water of Zam Zam is for whatever it has been drunk for.”

[Ahmad]

• Dua inside the Ka’bah

“When the Prophet [saws] entered the Ka’bah, he made dua in all of its corners.”

[Muslim]

• Dua at Safa and Marwa

It is narrated that the Prophet [saws] would make long dua’s at Safa and Marwa.

• Dua after stoning the Jamarat

It is narrated that the Prophet [saws] would stone the small Jamarah (small pillar, click here for image) and then face the qibla, raise his hands and make dua for a long time. He would do the same thing for the middle Jamarah. Then, he would stone the big Jamarah and leave without making dua.

• Dua on the Day of Arafah (see below)

The Prophet [SAWS] said, “There is no day in which Allah frees greater number of His slaves from the Hellfire than the Day of `Arafah.”

Specific Duas to Make During Hajj and Umrah

• During Tawaf – Between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone

“O our Lord, grant us the best in this life and the best in the next life, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” [AlBaqarah:201]

[Narrated in Abu Daoud, Ahmad]

• When standing at Mount Safa and Marwa

Jaabir said when describing the Prophet’s [saws] pilgrimage: ‘…and when he approached mount Safa he recited:

(i)

‘Indeed Safa and Marwah are from the places of worship of Allah…’ ‘I begin with what Allah began with.’

…so he started with Safa and climbed it until he could see the Ka’bah, he then faced it and said:

(ii)

‘Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest.’

…and then he would say the following three times marking a supplication after each time:

(iii)

‘None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner. To Him belongs all sovereignty and praise and He is over all things omnipotent. None has the right to be worshipped except Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, aided His Servant and single-handedly defeated the allies.’

…he [saws] would repeat this action at Marwah.

• The Day of ‘Arafah

The best of supplications is the supplication on the day of ‘Arafah and the best which I and the Prophets before me have said (is):

‘None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone, without partner. To Him belongs all praise and sovereignty and He is over all things omnipotent.’

[Tirmidhi]

• At Muzdalifah

The Prophet [saws] rode his camel, AlQaswa’, until he reached the sacred area (Al Mash’aril-Haraam, Muzdalifah). The he faced the Qiblah and invoked Allah and repeatedly said the words:

• Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)
• Allahu Ahad (Allah is exclusively, incomparably, uniquely One)
• Laa ilaha illallah (There is none worthy of worship except Allah)

He remained stationary until the sky became yellow with the dawn, and then pressed on before sunrise.
