Revive a Sunnah: Hijama For Diseases

Bismillah.

What happens when someone gets a headache or they feel sick? Either they take some medicine hoping for immediate relief, or they visit the doctor. But what did the Prophet صل الله عليه و سلم do?

Abdullah ibn Abbas reported that the Messenger صل الله عليه و سلم was cupped on his head for a unilateral headache while he was in Ihraam.

[Bukhari]

Anas ibn Maalik reported that the Messenger said, “Indeed the best of remedies you have is cupping (hijama)…”

[Bukhari]

Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger صل الله عليه و سلم said, “If there was something excellent to be used as a remedy then it is cupping (hijama).”

[Sunan Abi Dawud, Sunan Ibn Majah]

Hijama (cupping) is one the strongest sunnahs of the Prophet صل الله عليه و سلم, but how many of us even think of it as a cure for our diseases? How many of us even know that something like hijama exists?

What is Hijama?

Hijama (حِجَمَة) comes from the root al-hajm, which means “sucking”. Cupping (hijama) is the process of applying cups to various points on the body by removing the air inside the cups to form a vacuum. This vacuum sucks out the diseased blood which is then poured into the cups by making small cuts to the skin and then disposed.

When performed properly, this is a safe process and there are no health risks in the process (unlike acupuncture, for example).

Proven Sunnah of the Prophet صل الله عليه و سلم

Allah has made an amazing cure for us for all diseases in hijama. The Prophet صل الله عليه و سلم got hijama on his head, on his foot [Ibn Majah], on his neck [Abi Dawud], on his hip [Abi Dawud], etc.

The angels recommended to the Prophet صل الله عليه و سلم that he recommend hijama to his ummah.

Abdullah ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet صل الله عليه و سلم said, “I did not pass by an angel from the angels on the night journey except that they all said to me: Upon you is cupping (hijama), O Muhammad.”

[Saheeh Sunan ibn Majah]

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud the angels said, “Oh Muhammad, order your nation with cupping (hijama).”

[Saheeh Sunan Tirmidhi]

Benefits of Hijama

Hijama is not just a reactionary medicine for a disease. It is actually a preventative measure that prevents diseases, in it is a cure for all diseases by the permission of Allah, it strengthens the memory, improves the intellect and prevents blood from getting hot [Ibn Majah]. Action Needed

Given hijama‘s importance, its benefits and that its a proven sunnah of the Prophet صل الله عليه و سلم, we must revive this sunnah in our lives by finding practitioners of hijama and get it performed on us.

Lastly, please spread the khair by:

  1. assalamu’alaykum
jazak Allah Khayr for the article.
Question is, where do we find qualified people to do this in the West?

  2. As salaamu ‘aleykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuhu

Forgive me for a comment not related to the post. There is an excellent new blog dedicated to a book called: *An Incomplete History: The Muslims of Spain Post 1492 in a Global Context and its Relevance to Muslims Today*

    http://historyofandalus.wordpress.com/

The situation of the Muslims living in the West today poses a striking similarity to the situation of the Muslims in Al- Andalus post 1492 (when the last Muslim ruler surrendered the last Muslim stronghold of Granada to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella). This marked the official end to Islamic rule in Al- Andalus. The end of Islamic rule was also marked by the Capitulations of Granada which was signed between Abu Abdullah Muhammad the Twelfth and the Spanish Crown of Castille. The agreement seemed to be made binding upon the Spanish Crown of Castille but as the reader shall see, it was broken within ten years after the agreement was put into effect.

Muslims lived in Andalus for at least two hundred years after the fall (1492). Their lives were not easy. In many cases they were forced to give up their identities, could not practice Islam in public, they were not allowed to speak Arabic (and therefore could not pray in congregation) or even give their children Muslim names! So what began as tolerance for the practice of Islam in Al- Andalus and allowing for their affairs to be judged under Shari’ah courts (Capitulations of Granada) slowly but surely led to the persecution of the Muslims of Al-Andalus until no trace of Islam in Andalus was to be found.

  3. Asalamu Alaikum

I recently got cupped and wish I had never waited so long. BarakAllahu feek for reminding about the significance of hijamah and urging it to be revived.

Fortunately therapists are being trained in the West.

For example, Anisa Kisson of NHNF in London, teaches hijama therapy, a course that is recognised by the Complementary Medical Association, which therefore allows the qualified therapist to now even obtain professional indemnity insurance ! – obviously something useful and reassuring to have for your patients if you are a therapist practicing in the West.

    Hope that helps

  5. Assalaamu Alaikum..
ive been practicing hijaamah for over two years from home..ive learnt and implemented the sunnah in the house and alhumdulillah it has brought with it many benefits. the hadith on cupping should be sufficient for muslims to believe that it is the best of medicines. however, research is being carried out to address and reassure those who do not whole heartedly believe in its cure. i believe a recent publication on knee arthritis is available for the public for rectification

Alhamdulillah, nice to hear of your experiences.

If you are happy to share them on our hijama blog, please contact me.

    JazakAllah for your help.

    salaam,

JazaakAllaahu khair for opening this platform on hijaamah which truely is a blessing for this ummah. Alhamdulillah, i know of a elder who gave a testimony infront of a room full of people who were all to have hijaamah done. This particular elder, just after walking out of the ‘hijaamah theatre’ he related to us that he hadnt been able to turn his head towards his right due to severe muscular rigidity in his neck and as soon as the hijaamah was done on his neck he was able to move his head to the right as many times as he wanted without feeling an iota of pain. What was more glorifying was that he said he’d been taking painkillers for sumthing like 20 years without any significant improvent, whereas 5 mins hijaamah and subhaanAllaah the pain was gone in a jiffey!!!
May Allaah swt give the ummah the tawfeeq to reep benefits from Prophetic medicine, Ameen.

  8. salaam aleykum wa rahmatullah

I did the hijama on me twice and it is subhanallah such amazing spiritual healing tool.

Alhamdulillah that we have something like that.

I would like to know where can I learn to do the same and help whoever has a need inshAllah te’alla.

Where can I read a book about it or watch videos?

  9. salam walaikum wa rahmatullah. Does anyone know of the benefits hijama has on someone that is possessed, seffering severe black magic problems or the benfits it has in menatl health?

  10. Asalamu alaykum. Jazak Allah khair for highlighting the the importance of reviving a Sunnah. I was looking into getting training to be a Hijama therapist to reep the rewards of reviving a Sunnah and making a living out of it at the same time, but was told by someone that RasulAllah (saw) cursed the person who takes payment for performing Hijama. can someone please help me on this issue, is there any truth in this? Jazak Allah khair.

  11. Salams

As for hijama to treat black magic, I understand it can help however not seen it personally myself yet, so would like to learn more about that myself. I guess same goes for mental health problems.

Re: charging for hijama services, there seems to some debate about that. I recently came across someone making a similar comment (hijama is a sunnah, therefore you shouldn’t charge as you are making money from sunnah??!), however someone then replied that you should similar not charge for circumcision, miswaks or any other sunnahs.

The debate rages on, and I am looking for a conclusive answer to this myself so if anyone else can please enlighten, that would be great!
